Are you looking for a change of scenery away from the sea and sun? Well, you're in luck because there's one thing Jamaica is famous for asides from its sandy beaches: its spectacular waterfalls! Check out our guide to the best falls on the island.
Dunn's River Falls (Ocho Rios)
As one of Jamaica's national treasures, Dunn's River Falls is one of the island's most beautiful spots, and many who have visited will come back again and again -- whether in person or just in their dreams.
Local legend says the falls are alive and scientists have proven that the rocks continue to renew themselves and grow out of the deposits of travertine rock. This comes from the precipitation of calcium carbonate upstream that cascades over the falls. You'll commonly find this kind of behavior in thermal springs in limestone caves, where dome-shaped cataracts form.
Combining this unique geology at Dunn's River Falls with its proximity to the sea makes it a unique place, not just in the Caribbean, but also in the whole world.
Mayfield Falls (west of Montego Bay)
Mayfield Falls span across a property of five acres, and if you are a fan of backpacking, camping, hiking and all things outdoors, then this will be right up your alley. The natural environment surrounding the area is a far cry from urban city life, so do make sure you bring along all the necessary amenities that you'll need for your stay.
If you're an adrenaline junky, then you'll find some exciting activities to keep the blood pumping, from cliff to cave diving. If that all sounds exhausting, then you can just chill out in one of the natural Jacuzzis you'll find under the waterfalls.
The customer service on offer at Mayfield Falls goes above and beyond the call of duty. Not to mention you can even treat yourself to tutorials in the local folk dance or take cooking classes that'll instruct you on the usage of local herbs and spices in the region's cuisine.
YS Falls (South Coast)
A visit to the YS Falls and you'll believe that you've been transported into paradise. These stunning falls are located at the heart of the country, nestled at the base of the St. Elizabeth hills, where lush vegetation surrounds these seven-tiered waterfalls.
A tractor drawn jitney carries you down into this hidden valley, through farmland filled with thoroughbred horses and cattle. After the bumpy journey, you can relax in the pools constantly fed by natural springs that run both underground and above ground. If the conditions are right, you can also get involved with some river tubing. You'll find canopy rides that'll take you above the falls, where breathtaking views span out in the forest below.
Reach Falls (Port Antonio)
When the slaves ran away from the plantations in the vicinity of the St. Thomas Parish, they came across these beautiful falls in the sanctuary of the John Crow Mountains.
Hidden deep in the mountain range, these falls are now a prized eco attraction. Upon arrival, visitors can expect pampering in a refreshing cocktail of relaxation, adventure and comfort, not to mention you'll also have the chance to partake in nature tours, boat rides and you can even explore the legendary underwater cave. If you're really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a wild pig scouting for food on the mountainside.
Discovery Falls (Negril)
Discovery Falls are just fifteen minutes away from the Negril town center. Recently reopened for public use, you'll not only find beautiful waterfalls, but also an area rich in palm trees, lagoons and natural springs.
If you're more daring by nature, then you can partake in a zip line adventure where you'll hang by a cord 1000 feet above the forest floor.
No matter where you go, visiting one of the many stunning waterfalls in Jamaica is guaranteed to leave you with memories and experiences that you'll cherish for a lifetime.
